Cameron Diaz : biography

Cameron's heritage is Cuban-American (her father), and German, Native American and English (her mother). Born August 30, 1972 in San Diego and raised in Long Beach, California, she described herself as "wild", listened to heavy metal music (her mother took her to her first concert), and loved to party. She began modelling at the age of sixteen, and with her parents' approval, moved to Japan with a fellow model; she also has lived in Australia, Morocco, Paris and Mexico.

Her first acting role in "The Mask" at age 21, gained instant success, but the tension left her with an ulcer. She broke her wrist practicing karate for the movie "Mortal Kombat", and had to relinquish that role. The responsibilities of "big films" left her uneasy, so she turned her attention to independent films. She won the role of Freddie in "Feeling Minnesota" over 70 other hopefuls. With the success of her independent films, she was named Female Star of Tomorrow in 1994.

Returning to commercial films, she went on to shine in "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "A Life Less Ordinary" in 1997. As Mary in "There's Something About Mary", the sleeper hit of 1998, she has proven her flair for quirky, offbeat comedy, and has made the successful transformation from model to superstar actress.
